Insight Turkey, one of the leading academic journals in Turkey, in its latest issue “Turkey- U.S. Relations in Troubled Times” presents the current situation of the Turkish-American relations. Furthermore this issue provides to its readers a general framework of regarding the latest developments in Turkey and its surrounding regions while taking into account the COVID-19 repercussions.
The commentaries of this new issue of Insight Turkey touch upon the ever-changing Turkey-U.S. relationship. Luke Coffey encourages policymakers to start small and think big to rebuild this relationship, while Kadir Üstun explains how both countries ties have been able to survive despite years of diverging interests. Moreover, Jennifer Miel examines the economic and commercial opportunities for the U.S. and Turkey during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Among research articles, Burhanettin Duran points out how the pandemic might affect the international system by creating a global instability, meanwhile Mustafa Kibaroğlu discusses if this pandemic would grant a favorable environment for Turkey and the United States to reset their relations in order to accommodate themselves better to the new realities in international politics. Çağatay Özdemir focuses on the recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and by describing the situation as a U.S.-backed containment of Turkey, Özdemir examines the formation of the anti-Turkish bloc and discusses its possible repercussions in Turkish foreign policy. M. A. Muqtedar Khan also made great contribution to this issue with his insight on a post-orientalist discussion to challenge the dominance of orientalism on American foreign policy towards Islam.
In addition to these articles, there are some constructive pieces on a range of topics covering different issues relating to Turkey, the Middle East, and international politics. Kasım Timur, Rasim Özgür Dönmez, Fatma Armağan Teke Lloyd, Dmitry Shlapentokh, Emrah Kekilli, Bilgehan Öztürk, Turgay Yerlikaya and Ouafaa Rafi have enriched our issue with their valuable contributions.
