According to the common opinion, the name of Kedreai is derived from the cedar tree. In greek language cedar was Kedros, and the name of city was thought to be "the people of the place with cedar trees".
Theother possibility for the origin of the name comes from the Luwian language where Karda (K(uwa)-Adra meaning SacredMan) was used in Greek language as Kadrai (the people of kadra) then transformed to Kedreai.
The island is mostly famous with its sand that was, according to the legend, brought from Egypt especially for Princess Cleopatra by Iulius Caesar's close frien, famous Roman commander and orator Marcus Antonius. That's why the island is also known as Cleopatra Island.
