Tales of Mystery & Horror
CEF A1
by Bram Stoker –Leo Tolstoy
Malcolm Stevenson is a student at college. Malcolm is twenty-one years old and he is in his final year. Classes are over and Malcolm is studying hard for his examinations.
But Malcolm is unable to study at home. He lives with his family and the large house is always noisy.
“I can’t study here at home,” Malcolm tells his father. “It’s far too noisy. I’m going to find a quiet house in a small country town. I want to be alone there and I want to work hard.”
His father agrees and Malcolm packs all his books and papers into a suitcase. He takes a train to a small quiet town called Benchurch.
Benchurch is in the country. Malcolm has no idea about this town.
Malcolm stays the first night in a small hotel. The next morning, after breakfast, he walks round the town. In a quiet part of the town, Malcolm finds a large, old house.
The garden in front of the house is very untidy and the house looks empty. There is a shop not far from the house. Malcolm goes into the shop and asks about the old house…
